Literacy Connects Us

In 1990, a number of adults and children in the District of Mission were identified as having low literacy skills. To address this problem, a group of like-minded community members came together to form Mission Literacy in Motion Association (MLiM).  Over the years, MLiM has been involved in a wide variety of literacy initiatives.  MLiM partners with community agencies, Provincial organizations and charities to provide literacy programs and literacy awareness to the community.

Since 1999, Mission Literacy in Motion has proudly provided the Reading Buddies program to the Mission community. As we celebrate 25 years of fostering literacy and community connection, we are deeply grateful for the ongoing support and partnerships with in the community.

Our Mission Statement

We are an inclusive non-profit society providing literacy support and assistance for community members seeking to enhance their literacy skills, participate more fully in their community and move forward in their work, education and life goals. Literacy encompasses language, finance, communications, digital learning and connection to culture.

We’re thrilled to share that Mission Literacy in Motion has won the Charity/Non-Profit of the Year award! September is Literacy Month

Since 1999, Mission Literacy in Motion has proudly provided the Reading Buddies program to the Mission community. As we celebrate 25 years of fostering literacy and community connection, we are deeply grateful for the ongoing support and partnerships that have contributed to the program’s enduring success.

Throughout these years, Mission Literacy in Motion has consistently ensured the program’s effectiveness by providing a dedicated facilitator to manage and run the sessions. We take pride in fully funding the facilitator and covering the program’s operational costs.

While the Mission Public Library graciously provides a meeting space and additional support, the financial backing that sustains the program comes from multiple sources, including Decoda Literacy Solutions, Postmedia’s Raise-a-Reader initiative, and the District of Mission.

The Buddies meet for one hour, once a week, on the same day and time. Each session is designed to be flexible and engaging, incorporating puzzles, games, colouring, and, of course, reading. The primary goal is to spark a genuine interest in reading by creating a positive and enjoyable experience for the students through their connection with their Big Buddy.

We recognize that the students in the Reading Buddies program may not have taken to reading for various reasons—English might not be spoken at home, they may have difficulty sitting still or engaging in the same activity for an extended period, or they might not yet have discovered a genre that captures their interest. By making the sessions enjoyable and diverse, we aim to help each child form a positive relationship with reading and their Big Buddy.

Ultimately, we want the experience to be rewarding and fun for both the student and the volunteer, ensuring that each Buddy looks forward to their time together.

What is Family Literacy?

Early literacy gives families the tools they need to succeed.

The essence of family literacy is that parents are supported as the first teachers of their children. Programs work with individuals as well as with the family unit. While family literacy programs provide developmental experiences for young children, their parents are offered instruction in parenting skills and parental support to change patterns of family interaction. Family literacy involves the literate activities families engage in at home and in the larger community. These interactive routines might include reading and writing together, when singing with your child you are helping them hear the parts of words, playing an educational video game, or simply talking to infants and responding to the sounds they make.
