What is Family Literacy?

Early literacy gives families the tools they need to succeed.

The essence of family literacy is that parents are supported as the first teachers of their children. Programs work with individuals as well as with the family unit. While family literacy programs provide developmental experiences for young children, their parents are offered instruction in parenting skills and parental support to change patterns of family interaction. Family literacy involves the literate activities families engage in at home and in the larger community. These interactive routines might include reading and writing together, when singing with your child you are helping them hear the parts of words, playing an educational video game, or simply talking to infants and responding to the sounds they make.

Numerous studies have shown the many developmental benefits of positive contact as part of a baby’s early life. Touch is your baby’s first language and infant massage is one of the most natural and pleasant methods of providing this early nurturing contact.
Children learn and take in information from the world through all their senses. By providing activities to engage your child’s senses, you are helping to build new brain connections and make your child more knowledgeable. During these sessions parents will learn what senses are strongest in young children and how to best support new learning. Activities will focus on the sense of touch and how children learn through touch. Baby massage is proven to have countless benefits including improved growth and development, improved immunity, sleep, and bonding with parents.
